Studio Policies
Welcome to the exciting world of music and piano exploration. Please read the following carefully, and retain for future reference.
Attendance/Makeups: I assume that my students are committed to taking lessons for the full school year. If it is not possible to continue through the year, please give a month’s notice. Students need to arrive at each lesson on time, well prepared and with all necessary materials. Please bring a spiral notebook for me to write out weekly assignments.
If it is not possible to be present for a lesson please call me at home at least 24 hours in advance. I offer one makeup per semester for any excused absence (mainly illness) with advance notice. In the rare instance that a student is irregular in attendance or repeatedly fails to prepare assigned material, that student may forfeit his opportunity to continue private lessons.
Tuition: Monthly fees are payable in advance. This amount remains the same each month, as the number of holiday weeks is offset by the number of 5-week months. Twice a year, group classes will substitute for the private lesson. Payment is due the first lesson of each month and a $15 fee will be added if tuition is late. In addition to the lesson fee, new music will be given periodically, and the price included in the following month's tuition.
Practicing: By enrolling in piano lessons, you have made a big commitment – the commitment to practice your assignment six days per week! Parents, please help your child to set up a specific time each day to practice, and encourage and support them in this activity. (Parents of elementary-age students should supervise this process in a way similar to homework.) Students should keep their notebooks open to their assignment page and follow the directions I give. The amount of time spent on the assignment should be recorded daily, and parents should add their signature before the lesson each week. Efficient practice leads to progress and success, which in turn leads to enjoyment!
Performance Opportunities: There will be two recitals per year, as well as non-competitive festivals that students are required to participate in. Serious, hard-working students can participate in competitions, the main one being sponsored by the Georgia Music Teachers Association. Performing is rewarding, and a great incentive to practice and memorize.
Communication: Parents, students and the piano teacher form a team, and to promote this I will often communicate with you parents through your child’s notebook, or give you an occasional call. Please feel free to write me notes in the notebook or call with any suggestions you may have – I truly welcome this, and your child may be too shy to speak with me candidly!
Miscellaneous: Pianos need to be tuned and well-maintained with direct lighting on the music. Smaller kids will need a cushion or books to sit on. Also, the room should be quiet and free of distractions before practice time begins. Fingernails need to stay trimmed. Digital pianos must be 88 keys with weighted action, a pedal and a piano bench.
